Tour of Holy Hill,
International Cycling Classic, Hartford, WI -- July 17, 2006 Cat 3
Men Hey Mark, I don't know if you've gotten any feedback from Ross
or Ron yet but it was a pretty decent day for Team Brone's on Monday. Ross
put himself in a good position on the finishing straight and that was good
to see. As for me, I tried repeatedly to get something going but was
unable. It's a long story but basically there were several teams working
together and they were only going to let certain friends of theirs go up the
road. They would let some people just plain ride away but the second you
tried to bridge it or get something going they would chase like mad and then
sit on. It was really frustrating as I was in three or four break attempts
on the 4th lap alone, most having very good chances of survival on a normal
day but nothing would go. Heck, I even counterattacked my own attack -
twice! I was getting pretty pissed off by the last lap and it took all I
had not to start bitching at them every time they closed one. Even on the
very last hill I was pushing the front and nobody would get on or pull
through. I turned around to one guy and asked him WTF and he just said he
was too tired. For cripes sakes, there's less than two miles to go!
Anyway, I was up front for the finish but had spent most of my energy
working for a break. I had one burst left and made the most out of it but
unfortunately forgot that the finish line is actually 50 meters past the
peak of the roller. Hit the base of it and gave it what I had left. Should
have saved one more ounce because at the top I was top 5 but faded over the
last 50 meters and gave up a few easy spots to finish 8th. What really made
me mad was that there were guys I hadn't seen since rolling out of the park
who were contesting the sprint. Never put in a single effort up to then. I
just hate that. Gimme a big hill and we'll see who's there at the end of
the day - no freeloaders! --Chris
