Big Ring Flyers TT (WiSport) Last Sunday six members of the Brone’s bike shop time trialing team ventured north to Hudson, Wisconsin to engage in the big ring flyers time trial. The day turned out to be a success weather wise as well as results wise. All six members of the team medaled. Mark Brone managed to scorch the course to finish second only behind, guess who? Yup, Gordy…Way to go Marko! Brett Whyte continues to show his dominance in time trialing and finished a very impressive ride. Brett is presently ranked # 1 in his division in WiSport, strong work buddy! Gary, the ageless one Brone, also managed to ride an outstanding race. Gary, too, is currently number one in his division in WiSport. Max Rhyner, who reigns from Edgar, Wisconsin, also mastered the course with precision. Max was recruited by mark for a hefty contract to ride with the "southern" boys. Great race Max! Riding his first time trial race ever was Jerry Lawson. Jerry rode a terrific race and medaled in his division. As a former rode racer, Jerry started time trialing with us on Tuesday nights last season. Jerry is proof that time trialing each Tuesday in Buffalo County makes you fast. Way to go jerry! And finally yours truly, Andy "the cat man" Seltz managed to come up with the goods. After a boneheaded gear change on the first hill, I managed to "rechain" and get on with it. Like Gary, I too am learning something new about this sport with each successive race. I am truly humbled how much I learn from my esteemed mentors. Congratulations to the team on a great effort, and thank the good lord we all stayed upright. Andy Big Ring Flyers TT – Hudson, WI. As told by Mark Brone…I was planning on doing this TT in the morning and then heading over to the Capital Crit in St. Paul for an afternoon run with some of the local fast boys but as my good fortune would have it I was unable to complete leg two of the journey. The night before was filled with restless sleep due to our daughter and her cold. She was up every hour and hence Shelli and I too. She ended up sleeping in our bed and I moving to the guest bed. No alarm clock meant I was up every hour thinking I’d overslept. Even though both of these events I was treating as more training races the guilt had already gotten to me by morning and I’d already decided to only do the Hudson event. Shelli was just as tired as I was and I wouldn’t have had any fun being away all day. In hindsight it was probably for the best as the hour and a half criterium was full on gas from the giddy up and since I generally disdain large packs and the crit format I would have probably been off the back before too long. As it was, my teammate Chris Ripp ( who earlier in the week tore my legs off on a hill workout we did together) had a hard time finishing in the field and as you may have read in Trent’s recap, he only finished 1/3 of the event before succumbing to the pain. Well, on to the TT as it turned out to be not only a pretty good showing for me but also the rest of the BBS team who showed up. I’ll spare you the gory details and get right to it. I finished a distant 2nd to the living legend Gordy Paulson and seeing as he started a minute and a half behind me and caught me at the finish line I’ll try to tell you it was an honor to have held him off. In hindsight, I was disappointed that I didn’t hold him off as my goal at the start line was to not let him catch me. However, I made the classic mistake of looking back a couple of times and when I saw him in the distance and knew I was in his cross hairs I wilted under the pressure. TT’s are all about you, the bike and the course and any extra stimuli after that is just wasted energy. When you’re not going well physically and everything seems forced and strained then it’s easier said than done to keep it together mentally and the TT is all about keeping it together. I did have some good moments throughout the race and actually came away with some more confidence that my training is on the right track to achieve some of my main goals. I think Andy “Cat Man” Seltz provides a better rendition of how each of us faired but I will include the entire overall results from the WiSport home page below. After the event I got a chance to mingle with some old and new faces I hadn’t seen in a while and since every WiSport event I’ve been to seems like a family gathering you get a chance to talk candidly to your fellow competitors. I spoke at length to someone I hadn’t seen since his days riding for Flanders. Ron Raymond, who is from that area was testing out his new TT bike and put in a good showing on virgin equipment. Since I hadn’t seen him in a while and since circumstances were different back then I had a certain opinion of Ron that couldn’t have been further from the truth. I found him to be a very humble and sincere guy who is into his family, mt. biking and work and not at all like the iron faced super serious roadie I’d believed him to be. He reflected back on that time and said that though some of them were good times he generally is glad he doesn’t ride for that team any more. Maybe we’ll catch up more at some event down the road. Finally, I must tell you that the 6 of us stopped at a cool little café in the heart of downtown Hudson and ate like kings and whooped it up before heading our separate ways. Thanks for reading…Mark
