Atkins 20K TT 2006

Atkins 20K TT, (WiSport) Cottage Grove, WI. Saturday, August 26^th. Sometimes the coolest things happen when you don’t expect them to and that was the case today. I don’t know what it was or why I wasn’t thinking that anything good was going to come of the event today but for some reason I really didn’t expect much from myself. Maybe it was because I was down in Madison the day before on some business and basically ate weird food and slept in a different bed but whatever it was I really truly never expected to cross the line with the best time. Maybe it was because I knew there was formidable competition there and maybe it was because I really hadn’t had many successes since flatting at Firehouse. The season was just getting to be long. That was my mindset as I lined up for my turn. I’d had a good warm up and it was a cloudy, humid and overcast day…muggy. The course was challenging with turns, climbs and descents constantly. I rode hard out of the shoot and started picking people off here and there. I was actually riding a little scared as some guy who really looked fast started behind me. I just kept telling myself not to get caught. By the time I hit the last hill and looked down at my computer I could tell I was having a pretty good run. I kind of botched the last climb and lost some seconds there but when I crossed the line and stopped my computer I was pretty happy with my time no matter where I finished. Of course there was the waiting to see who did what and when it was all over and the times had been tallied I had posted the fastest time of the event. That was really a cool bonus as by this time I’d spoken with a lot of teammates and other competitors and learned that most of them had felt good about their times and generally had done well so there was a good vibe all round. What made it really special was that fact that both the overall fastest male and female riders got this unique looking trophy of a person in the TT position on a TT bike. It was solid and even a little heavy so it was just cool. Anyway, I was kind of blown away by it and a little embarrassed to get a trophy but I’m sure in when I’m older and grayer I’ll look back on it as remember it like it was the Heisman Trophy or something…Funny! As you can see below, other team BBS members did pretty well too so again, it was a good day for all. Thanks for reading and hope to see you at the next event!
