2009 Wisconsin State RR Championships   Spring Prairie, WI.  Sunday June 7th 5:00pm Start.  40-49 open.  50+ Starters.

I wanted to thank you again for the support you provided yesterday.  Brett asked me during warm-ups where this race ranked for me in terms of personal goals and I kind of downplayed it.  To be honest, it was one of my primary goal races for this year.  What this team has taught me over the past two years is that the satisfaction of achieving a personal goal is minor compared to sharing the team success with you guys.   Here's the race "write up" from my perspective...

The Wisconsin State Championship road race for masters 40+ in Spring Prairie Wisconsin was held on June 7th.  The schedule had us going off late (5pm) for the 7 lap, 45 mile race.  A rolling course with the biggest, steepest climb just before the finish.  I managed to slip on the stairs while packing for the race and bang up my knee.  The two plus hour drive ensured it was stiff and sore by the time we arrived in Spring Prairie.  At first, I wasn't sure if I could race. But with the unwavering encouragement and confidence of my teammates and a checkup from the doc (thanks Brett), it finally loosened up and became a "non issue" for the race.  Team BBS was well represented with Brett Whyte and Brad Verstegen providing powerful support for Mark Brone, Todd Kinart, and myself.  As we have seen many times this year, team BBS showed that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts".  Early attacks by Brett, Mark, and Todd softened the field and set up the decisive break when I bridged to Chris Halverson (CH) early in the second lap.  This was good for team BBS and CH.  If we stayed away, we would both would win state championships (40-44 age group for me and 45-49 age group for CH).  I knew that the rest of the BBS guys would chase down any other attackers and discourage an organized chase. This made my job simple, just stay off the front with CH.  As always, Chris was extremely strong and really drove the break.  I also did my share of pulling which made for a really tough race. Meanwhile, the rest of team BBS was expressing its dominance, effectively ensuring the success of the break.  In the end, Chris had more gas up the final hill and took a well deserved win and I hung on for a close second.  Mark and Todd made repeated attacks out of the diminished field in the last lap until Mark was able to get off solo and hang on for third (and the silver medal in the 40-44 age group) thanks in no small part to the blocking efforts of Todd and Brett.  The bottom line, second and third overall and a state championship for team BBS. Not a bad day. What a great team.
