Ok, so here are the reports on Durand and Ken Woods.     4-18-09 & 4-25-09

First of all Durand was a blast as Mark got out the big RV for the trip north. It all started out a little shaky with the whole crew getting out to water the flowers prior to finding the race course. No pictures, sorry.

The 3/4 race which included myself, Chris Ripp, Garret Ping and Dan Logan, started out fairly frisky with some attacks coming within the first few miles. these were either initiated by us or covered by us. We were definitely well represented on the front as we all did a lot of work to push the pace and to split the field. The field was fairly aggressive and nothing was breaking free. On the last lap there were a few attacks from a couple different guys and I found myself sitting out in front just a bit as these attacks I was covering kept getting brought back. Finally one attack stuck with another rider. We were able to stay away and I had a good feeling about it as he had said he was not sure if we could stay away...he was tiring. I wanted him to stay with me for a little while so I kept pimping him with "good job buddy" and other crap. It worked as he stayed with me until the last mile or so and he fell off my wheel on a small incline.

I have to thank my teammates for helping me out with bridging gaps and sitting up when the time was right. Nobody wants to chase a break when the attackers teammates are so dominate in the group. They certainly covered me well and made it possible.

As far as Ken woods goes, I was just glad we were racing in dry weather. Mike Suntken, Garrett Ping and I made up the trio for Brone’s in the Cat 3 race. After we started rolling I noticed my bladder filling fast...I hate that! Anyway, Mike started pushing the pace right away and got the group moving. There were some guys from Flanders and other teams that looked to be pretty good. I really was not feeling the greatest and was sitting on the back trying to figure out how to take a leak while going 30 mph on a bumpy road...no luck.

We got to the back section of the course and Mike bridged up to an attack by a GP guy.  A few others followed and I was thinking there goes the winning group. I moved up towards the front to follow reactions by the main group. We ended up chasing back on a few minutes later and I decided to attack once we bridged. I figured a few would come with but nope. I was on my own. The rest of the story is pretty simple. I buried my head and tried to pace it as high as I could for the next 2 laps. Sounds like the group was really marking Mike and Garret and did not want to work. I was in the right spot at the right time and Mike set it up very well although I know we were not thinking that early in the race. what the heck, it worked. We hit Chipotle afterwards for some good food. I hit 37 years on Sunday and it was a great present that is for sure! Thanks guys!
